More about the Group

About Us

The Sheringham History Group welcomes people who have an interest in the local history of North Norfolk, particularly of Sheringham, and the County of Norfolk itself to join us either as Members or as Visitors.

The Group began its life as part of the town’s Preservation Society which was responsible for the ‘Heritage Walk’ and Blue Plaques around the town.

A group of local history enthusiasts with an interest in and a wish to celebrate the town’s rich heritage then began meeting in the original museum in Station Road. Now the Group normally meets in the Sheringham Museum.

For the past few years the Group has been under the guidance of Hugh Bradbury.

At the 2023 AGM the members unanimously approved of the appointment of Neil Storey to the position of Honorary President.

Our Meetings and Visits

The Group meets on the first Wednesday of most months, normally at the Sheringham Museum at the Mo, on the seafront, gathering at 7.00 pm for a 7.30 pm start.

Most of the meetings take the form of an illustrated talk given by a local expert, normally on a topic relating to Sheringham, North Norfolk or the county of Norfolk as a whole.

Recent talks include “The 1953 Floods” by Neil Storey, “Reading & analysing the historic landscape of your area” by Adrian O’Dell and “The History of the Newhaven Court Hotel, Cromer” by Helen Murray”.

A party of around 30 History Group members had a very interesting and informative morning tour of parts of this school, courtesy of Mr Simon Kinder, their Head of History. The picture was taken in the new Sir James Dyson STEAM building.

In December we hold a social event at a local venue for members to get together. For example in 2022 an afternoon tea party was held at the Whelk Coppers Tea Rooms in in Sheringham.

You can find out about our recent talks, outings and social events , by visiting our archive page.

The programme of our 2022 meetings can be found on the Future Events page.
