The Smugglers of Wells – Steve Adcock
Event preceded by virtual AGM
2 September 2026 : 7:30 PM – 9:15 PM
Smugglers of the 18th and 19th centuries are often depicted as heroic figures defying high taxes and an oppressive government, all set against a backdrop of moonlight, secret tunnels and rugged coastline. Welcome to Wells-next-the-Sea.
Steve Adcock is a member of the Wells Local History Group, having spent a career in law enforcement, and with the aid of local historical records and photographs, takes one beyond the stereotypical romantic portrayal of these rebellious heroes to shine a light on the reality of smuggling at the time, often by dangerous and violent criminals.
AGM papers will be distributed ahead of the meeting. After the talk there will be the opportunity to discuss any matters arising and to address any question that members may have.
Meet at the Sheringham Museum at the Mo. 7.00 for a 7.30 start.
The museum is on Lifeboat Plain. Please use the School Entrance towards the rear of the building.
